Over 5,700 Afghan refugees return home in single day

KABUL, May 20 (Xinhua) -- More than 5,700 Afghan refugees ended their exile and returned to their homeland Afghanistan on Tuesday, reported the official Bakhtar News Agency on Wednesday.

A total of 1,077 refugee families, composed of 5,781 persons, returned to Afghanistan on Tuesday, the official media outlet said, adding that out of these, 1,179 people were transported to their home provinces.

The remaining returnees will also be transferred to their home provinces after receiving necessary assistance, including cash, SIM cards, medical aid and food supplies, at the crossing points.

According to reports, more than 2.5 million Afghan refugees, mostly from neighboring Pakistan and Iran, have returned to their homeland since early 2025, as the host countries have asked those without legal documents to leave.
