KABUL, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has successfully registered around 95 percent of the country's SIM cards, marking a significant milestone in efforts to formalize the telecommunications sector, an official said on Monday.
More than 30 million SIM cards have been officially documented since the registration campaign began, the ministry spokesman Enayatullah Alokozay said on Monday via X.
"We are working to ensure that all SIM cards in the country are distributed through legal channels," he added.
Official data indicates that around 9,000 telecommunications towers are currently operational nationwide, providing essential connectivity to millions of Afghans.
Five mobile operators, four private companies and one state-owned entity deliver services across the country. One operator recently initiated 5G network testing in the capital Kabul, signaling tentative progress toward upgrading Afghanistan's telecommunications infrastructure.
