Unexploded ordnance blast kills 1 child, injures 3 in E. Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- One child was killed and three others were injured when an unexploded ordnance from past conflicts detonated in eastern Afghanistan's Wardak province, according to a statement from the provincial police office released late Sunday.

The children found a toy-like object and began playing with it when the device exploded, killing one child instantly, the statement said. The three injured were transferred to the capital, Kabul, for medical care.

War-torn Afghanistan remains one of the world's most heavily contaminated countries by landmines and explosive remnants of war. Dozens of people, predominantly children, are killed or maimed each month in explosions caused by devices left from decades of conflict.
