1 killed as unexploded ordnance goes off in E. Afghanistan

KABUL, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- A person was killed as unexploded ordnance left over from the past wars exploded in the eastern Afghanistan Nangarhar province on Wednesday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hemad said Thursday.

The deadly incident took place in Spinghar district on Wednesday afternoon, killing a shepherd, the official added.

A similar accident claimed the life of a child and injured six others in Kunar province a week ago.

Afghanistan has been regarded as one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world.
