KABUL, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Police raided the hideouts of two kidnappers and rescued two children from their clutches in northern Afghanistan's Sari Pul province on Monday, Provincial Police Spokesman Naqibullah Alamyar said.

Acting on a tip-off, police launched operations in a remote area in the wee hours of Monday, arresting two kidnappers and finding the two abducted children, the official added.

Without providing more details, the official noted that both alleged kidnappers would be handed over to the judiciary after the completion of the preliminary investigation.

Although the crime rate has been largely reduced and peace has been restored in post-war Afghanistan, criminal elements still attempt to abduct members of wealthy families for ransom in the economically impoverished country.
