Nearly 200 Afghans killed in heavy rains, flash floods: Official

KABUL, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 200 people have been killed due to rainstorms and flooding across Afghanistan over the past 18 days, a spokesman of the country's National Disaster Management Authority said.

"Unfortunately, heavy rain, windstorms and deadly floods have claimed the lives of 189 people, nine are missing and 253 others were injured over the past 18 days," the official Radio and Television of Afghanistan quoted Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hammad on Monday night as saying.

According to the official, a total of 1,303 houses have been destroyed, and more than 5,800 others have been partially damaged due to rainstorms and flooding.

Major parts of Afghanistan have witnessed heavy rain, powerful winds and flash floods since March 25 and the meteorological department has forecast more rain for Tuesday in 14 out of the country's 34 provinces.
