Over 27 tons of narcotics destroyed in southern Afghanistan

KABUL, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have destroyed more than 27 tons of narcotics in the southern Kandahar province over the past five months, officials said Wednesday.

According to Mullah Assadullah Jamshid, spokesperson for the provincial police, the seized substances included 2,766 kg of opium, 9.664 kg of methamphetamine, 993 kg of cannabis, 1 kg of heroin, and several hundred kilograms of other drugs commonly used in heroin and other illegal narcotics.

The destruction took place in Tora area of Arghandab district under the supervision of a committee representing senior provincial departments.

Earlier, the province's Anti-Narcotics Unit had destroyed an additional 47,000 kilograms of various drugs under the same directive.
