Afghan authorities launch retaining wall projects to protect communities

KABUL, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have begun construction of key retaining wall projects in the southern Helmand and northern Badakhshan provinces, an official statement said Friday.

According to the statement, the construction project, valued at 72 million Afghanis (over 1 million U.S. dollars) in Gerishk district of Helmand province, aims to protect homes and farmlands from floods and river erosion.

Meanwhile, construction of the protective wall project in Wakhan district of Badakhshan province, costing over 443,000 dollars and to be completed within two years, has also started a couple of days ago, the statement said.

These initiatives are designed to safeguard riverbanks, agricultural land, and residential areas, reflecting Afghanistan's ongoing efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure and protect communities from natural hazards, the statement added.
