Afghanistan leads global migrant fatalities in 2025: UN

KABUL, April 1 (Xinhua) -- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has said that 1,492 Afghan nationals lost their lives or went missing while migrating across various regions of the world in 2025, local media outlet Tolo news reported on Wednesday.

Afghanistan had the highest number of migrant casualties worldwide during the past year. Most incidents were reported along land routes between Afghanistan and Iran, as well as on dangerous sea crossings, the report said.

Ongoing economic hardship and limited job opportunities in Afghanistan are pushing many to embark on irregular migration, putting their lives at serious risk in search of better living conditions abroad.
