KABUL, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Police have discovered arms and ammunition during a series of operations in Afghanistan's northern Balkh province and arrested 10 individuals on charges of keeping and carrying arms illegally, a local media outlet Ariana News reported Thursday.

The weaponry, which includes 19 pieces of assault rifles including AK-47, pistols and bullets, has been rounded up from illegal armed persons over the past two months, the private media outlet reported, citing police sources.

After a preliminary investigation, police referred the cases of arrested individuals to the judiciary, police said, according to the media outlet.

The Afghan interim government, as part of efforts to ensure sustainable peace and security in the post-war country, has vowed to collect arms and ammunition from anyone living outside the security organs.
