Afghan road mishap kills 3, raising weekly death toll to nearly 100

KABUL, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Three commuters perished and four others sustained injuries as their car turned turtle in the northern Afghanistan Balkh provincial capital, Mazar-i-Sharif city, on Monday, bringing the number of traffic accident-related deaths to nearly 100 in a week, a statement of the provincial police office said.

The deadly mishap took place on a road linking Mazar-i-Sharif to the border town Hairatan, leaving three dead on the spot and four more injured, the statement noted. This is the second road accident over the past two days.

Road accidents have left about 100 dead over the past week in Afghanistan, and the deadliest one was registered in the western Herat city when a passenger bus caught fire and killed 79 people, including women and children, last Tuesday.
