Afghan police foil attempts to traffic drugs to Tajikistan

KABUL, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Police have thwarted attempts to traffic illegal drugs from northern Afghanistan's Takhar province to neighboring Tajikistan and arrested the smuggler, provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir said Monday night.

The alleged drug smuggler, according to the official, was attempting to take 11 pockets of hashish and one pocket of methamphetamine via the Darqad district to Tajikistan on Monday, but police identified and foiled the attempt.

Police arrested the smuggler, the official said, adding that the case would be referred to the judiciary after the investigation was completed.
