KABUL, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan government on Tuesday initiated the work of a 10-megawatt solar power generating project, official sources said.

Constructed at a cost of 700 million afghanis (about 8.9 million U.S. dollars) by the private sector in Sarobi district, 60 km east of Kabul, the project would be completed within a year, according to a statement released by the office of Abdul Ghani Baradar, Afghanistan's acting deputy prime minister for economic affairs.

The war-torn Afghanistan is largely dependent on power imported from the neighboring states of Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

"This project may appear modest in terms of electricity production, but it holds immense significance in our journey toward self-sufficiency," the senior official said when inaugurating the project on Tuesday.
