LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Two children have lost their lives and three others sustained injury as a mortar round left over from the past war went off in south Afghanistan's Helmand province on Monday, provincial administration spokesman Mawlawi Riyaz said Tuesday.

The children found a toy-like object in Garmsir district and began playing on Monday afternoon, but the device exploded suddenly, killing two on the spot and injuring three others, according to the official.

All the victims belong to the same family, the official said.

War-torn Afghanistan is one of the most mine-contaminated countries as unexploded devices have claimed lives of over a dozen people, mostly children, each month in the country.
