TOKYO -- Japan's western prefecture of Osaka on Wednesday saw a record high of daily COVID-19 infections for the second straight day, logging 1,130 new virus cases.

A total of 4,312 new cases were reported nationwide, marking the highest number of daily cases since Jan. 23, with new infections in Tokyo reaching 591, according to the health ministry and local officials. (Japan-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture on Wednesday marked the fifth anniversary of two sizable earthquakes that claimed the lives of 276 people.

Five years since a magnitude 6.5 quake shook the southwestern region on April 14, 2016, and the area was rocked by a magnitude 7.3 quake two days later, hundreds of people remain displaced in the affected regions, with many of them still forced to live in makeshift accommodation. DHAKA -- In a grim landmark, Bangladesh on Wednesday reported 96 more deaths from COVID-19, the highest daily spike, bringing the death toll to 9,987.

The country's Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) also reported 5,185 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, raising its total tally to 703,170. (Bangladesh-COVID-19)

JAKARTA -- The death toll from the tropical cyclone Seroja that recently hit Indonesia's province of East Nusa Tenggara on Wednesday rose to 181, while 47 people remain missing, according to the latest official data.

At a virtual press conference held by the country's disaster mitigation agency on Wednesday afternoon, the province's deputy governor Josef Nae Soi reported that at least 250 people are still suffering injuries caused by the flash floods and landslides triggered by the cyclone earlier in April. ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had a telephone conversation on Wednesday to discuss Afghan peace process, the Pakistani army said.
