About Afghanistan News.Net
Afghanistan News.Net is a stand-alone site reporting on news, events, and people in Afghanistan. The site produces its own unique content, subscribes to news wires, and publishes reports from contributors. From the capital Kabul to the far-reaching corners of the country, Afghanistan News.Net is a long-time established news portal, up-and-operating long before the Internet was made available in the country. It has covered the rise and fall of the Taliban, the basing of Osama bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terrorist organization in Afghanistan, the destruction of ancient and historic statues in the country, the September 11 2001 attacks in the United States, the invasion in 2001, and the occupation of Afghanistan to this day. The site has reported on the establishment of the democratic elected government headed by President Hamid Karzai on December 22 2001, and is today covering the planned withdrawal of United States, and NATO forces scheduled for late 2014.
Afghanistan News.Net has been online for fourteen years now, well before the Internet was allowed. Afghanistan News.Net from its origins served those Afghans outside the country together with others with an interest in the country. When it was launched in 1999 Afghanistan News.Net was the only website at the time dedicated to news about Afghanistan. Whenever anyone searched for 'Afghanistan News' on any and every search engine, Afghanistan News.Net came up as the number one search result.
September 11 2001
So it was on September 11 2001 following the terrorist attacks in the United States it was widely understood that Osama bin Laden had orchestrated the attacks from his headquarters and training camps in Afghanistan, and our site was under intense demand. Historical notes show the number of unique visitors accessing the site in the hours after the attack hit 450,000, which at the time was a significant number. Within a day the site was targeted by thousands of angry users mainly from the United States who forwarded hate-emails, wrote letters to the editor and posted messages on the site's chat board abusive of Afghanistan and Afghans. Two days after the 9/11 attacks Afghanistan News.Net was targeted by hackers who brought the site down for several hours. As a result the entire Mainstream Media network of sites was disabled as they were all on the same servers.
